Coca Cola and Pepsi decided to modify their formulas

Coca-Cola and Pepsi decided to modify the process through which their soft drinks manufactured in California to avoid state regulations that would require them to be labeled containing a residue that could eventually have an effect on cancerous disease.

The legislation is based on a study that talked about a link with cancer but was denied by the World Health Organization (WHO), which stated that the risk from 4 - MEI (included in the products of both companies ) and cancer was lower than eating homemade potato chips.

The 4-MEI is present in many foods and beverages. Furthermore, according to studies by the U.S. agency that regulates food and drug market, would have to consume a thousand liters of soda coladurante two consecutive years so that eventually the accumulation of this waste could have an impact on disease.

Along with Coca-Cola, other soft drink manufacturers such as PepsiCo, decided to fit the specific situation in California and asked the suppliers to put in place changes in the manufacturing process they deem necessary to comply with legislation and guidelines labeling of California. Under new state regulations, all food products containing this substance should be labeled to warn of the risk of cancer.
