Canadian Seniors are often victims of accidents

Nearly half of all accidents and incidents occurring in the network of health and social services would occur in nursing homes and long-term care (nursing home). The Quebec Association of Retired (s) of public and parapublic sectors (AQRP) denounces this situation.

According to the Interim Report of incidents and accidents occurring during care delivery and health services in Quebec, published on the website of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, 43% of these events that occurred from April 1 to 30 September 2011sont arrived in the nursing home.

"For us, this situation in the nursing home is not unrelated to the fact that 64% of events in the network relate to persons aged 65 and over", said Thursday the president of the AQRP, Madelaine Michaud, in a statement denouncing the situation.

Falls, medication-related errors and to a lesser extent (2.5%), the potential for abuse, assault and harassment, are among the events affecting people 65 and older, indicates the report.

"The report identifies more than 75 000 events in six months in the nursing home in Quebec, for a population of 39 000 users. We can no longer say that this is an isolated situation, "concluded the President of the AQRP.
