Self-medication eye drops can cause glaucoma 2012

Self-medication eye drops can cause glaucoma 2012
The researcher Jesus Valdes Flores, Department of Biochemistry, Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV), warned that autorrecetarse eye drops can cause discomfort to any glaucoma.

The specialist explained that with a little discomfort, burning, watery eyes or conjunctivitis a person decides to self-medicate, may gradually lose vision to be blinded by what is known as steroid-induced glaucoma and open angle.

The researcher said that type of glaucoma are common due to self-medication, since anyone can buy eye drops without realizing that some analogs containing steroids such as dexamethasone, which causes the disease often used.

As part of World Glaucoma Day, said Mexico is estimated that between 600 thousand and a million and a half of patients with glaucoma, but no data on the number of people affected by the steroid-induced.

"What we do know is that the constant use of drops not prescribed by a specialist can cause damage," Valdes said Flores in a statement.

According to one skilled in molecular biology, glaucoma blocks the exit of eye fluid that must flow normally through the canaliculus of Schlemm and the trabecular meshwork, resulting in an increase in pressure within the eye.

The application of steroids results in induction of the long form of the protein called Z0-1, then the junctions between the cells become more watertight canal and block the flow, which increases intraocular pressure, exhibited.

According to a member of the National System of Researchers, steroid-induced glaucoma and open angle are more likely to reverse than others.

What is needed, he added, is to stop self-medication and treatments applied narrowly targeted against known proteins involved in the disease process.

"The first thing is lost to glaucoma is peripheral visibility, but people do not realize until your vision is reduced completely, when too late to reverse the problem," said Valdes Flores.

I think many physicians said that eye drops can be helpful to prevent glaucoma and it has also other treatment which can help to cure this disease.
