The Cancer Society is calling on Ottawa to act

The Canadian Cancer Society urged Monday the federal government to address the problem of drug shortages plaguing the country.

In a statement, the agency said it was unacceptable that patients are denied drugs they need and has asked the Federal Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq, quickly find a solution before the situation s 'worse.

Until the crisis is resolved, the company said it is imperative that health professionals are notified of any shortage as soon as possible and receive information on the reasons and duration and the lack on alternative drugs available.

It also recommended that the Standing Committee on Health of the House of Commons examines the causes of drug shortages and develop an action plan to avoid them.

Although the phenomenon of drug shortages is not new, it has recently gained momentum due to various glitches occurred in Boucherville plant of the pharmaceutical company Sandoz, which a fire that has forced it to suspend its production.
